2008 Conference Newsletter

As the days of winter get longer and thoughts turn to the coming growing season, we are pleased to announce that the seeds for our 2008 conference have germinated!

Schools, Food and Community, co-produced by Baum Forum and the Nutrition Program,

Teachers College Columbia University, will once again bring together professionals, advocates and youth committed to fostering healthy food choices and a healthy food environment for school children both in school and out. The conference will convene April 11th and 12th, 2008 at Teachers College.

The conference team that produced last year's sold out Schools, Food and Gardening: Cultivating a Healthy Future, is conspiring once again to present stimulating discussions on compelling topics as well as opportunities for hands-on workshops and demonstrations. The focus for our program will broaden this year to include connecting positive messaging and access to healthy foods in schools, homes, and neighborhoods; the challenges of supporting and maintaining innovation; and the Green Schools movement in New York City and elsewhere. Saturday's keynote speaker, Roberta Sonnino, a scholar on the school food revolution, will connect our subject with the concept of sustainable development, the overarching framework for this work we do.

While Saturday, April 12th is planned as the main day of this major educational and community-building event, this year we are expanding to Friday, April 11th for an additional half day of conference sessions and in-depth workshops, special meetings and an evening of cabaret-style entertainment. Please visit www.baumforum.org for more information.  Our website will be constantly updated with confirmed speakers, topics, sponsors and more.

In addition, please expect to receive this conference newsletter a few more times leading up to Schools, Food and Community.  We plan to communicate the latest on the conference as well as announce other upcoming events and resources of interest to you.  Please stay tuned and please register early!  Feel free to send your ideas and inquiries to events@baumforum.org.
